What social media platforms should your business use?

A summary on different social media platforms

The best social media apps are best for your business

Social media has been touted as one of the most effective way to reach a targeted audience and to engage with your customers (and potential customers) directly. That said, as the list below shows, the number of platforms can be very intimidating.

How is a small business owner supposed to manage all these platforms and actually do what makes them money – running their business? With experience, you will learn that you don’t need to run two dozen social media outlets to have an effective program.  Below is an extensive list of social media platforms and which one suits what type of business.

Facebook

Facebook has more than 2 billion monthly active users as of June 2017. As of April 2016, Facebook was the most popular social networking site in the world, based on the number of active user accounts. The sheer number of users means that Facebook will end up being a part of most social media strategy.

Facebook Audience Insights gives you aggregate information about three groups of people—people connected to your Page, people in your Custom Audience and people on Facebook—so you can create content that resonates and easily find more people like the ones in your current audience.

Google+

It’s arguable how many active users Google+ has but it really doesn’t matter when 64% of ALL searches online are done on Google.  If you are selling a product, it would be crazy not to put your widgets on Google+

Instagram

Over fifty percent of 18- to 29-year-olds use Instagram. So if your target audience falls in that age group, you may want to consider adding an Instagram strategy early in your social media marketing plans. 400 million daily active users is certainly not something to ignore!

Twitter

Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and interact with messages, called "tweets." These messages were originally restricted to 140 characters, but on November 7, 2017, the limit was doubled to 280 characters. As of 2016, Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users.

Twitter lets you hear what other people are saying. Using Twitter Search, you can find out what people are saying about a particular topic, enabling you to keep your ear to the ground about your company and the competition.

Youtube

There are more than 1 billion users on YouTube and the number of hours each month that viewers are watching videos has been steadily increasing by 50% year over year. Video has to be the most engaging form of communication but creating interesting and engaging content is more challenging than the more traditional outlets.

Vimeo

Like Youtube, Vimeo is a video-sharing website in which users can upload, share and view videos. With 280 million monthly viewers in June 2016, the viewership is certainly impressive.

LinkedIn

As CEO, most business owners need to be on LinkedIn.  Not only is it a great way to promote your business and update suppliers & customers of changes, this is a great place to hunt for staff!

Pinterest

With more than 150 million Pinners, Pinterest can help you reach in-demand audiences. According to Ahalogy, 67% of Pinners are under the age of 40 and 54% of women aged 34-55 are on Pinterest—35% of them have a household income over $100K. Around 5% of all referral traffic to websites comes from Pinterest, according to Shareaholic research. This is second only to Facebook, which drives almost 25% of all referral traffic on the web. (Twitter, StumbleUpon, Reddit and Google+ each refer less than a 1% share of the market.)

Tumblr

Tumblr serves both as a blog and social network that's useful for posting and sharing images, video, audio or short pieces of writing.

In that sense, Tumblr is a bit like Facebook -- but with a few advantages. For instance, Tumblr blogs can be accessed directly via the Web, whereas Facebook content is available only to its users. That means Tumblr content gets indexed by search engines and can increase your search visibility.

Snapchat

Its user base has reportedly hit 100 million people which is impressive but with nearly half the users (45% to be exact) are between 18-24 years old, the audience is certainly targeted.

Reddit

With 234 million unique users and 8 billion monthly pageviews, Reddit is the 7th most visited site online. The first thing you need to understand is that Reddit thrives on anonymity, but it's kept in check by transparency. True content is king here with self-promotion quickly dying.

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is a social media bookmarking site that allows users to “like” websites and add them to their profile. StumbleUpon has a very specific policy against using their service for promotional purposes. If you run a business and are only promoting your business’ website, you will most likely be identified as a spammer and kicked off the service. That is why it is greatly important to participate in the community.

Flipboard

Flipboard is a mobile application that aggregates content from around the web, based on topics of interest to the user, displaying it in a magazine-like format. You share content that appeals to your desired audience, which consists of people who may take an interest in your brand, products, or services.

Yummly

Yummly uses your “Yums” (think “likes”) for recipes and taste preferences to recommend recipes you’ll love. The more you Yum, the better they get. As far as niche, it doesn’t get more niche for social media platforms. If you’re in the right industry, then this is a must.

Houzz

Houzz is another niche social platform about architecture, interior design and decorating, landscape design and home improvement. The Houzz platform and mobile apps feature photos, articles, product recommendations, and a user forum. If this is your niche then the beautifully presented photos is hard to ignore.
